Cooler master haf xm review

Accessories and Documentation

In the hardware box you will find a motherboard speaker and about twenty wire ties (not pictured) and this full assortment of screws. In the bag at the left there are all the HDD screws and the bag on the right contains the risers and motherboard screws. The bottom left has eight shorter and four longer fan screws for the front and top of the chassis, while the right has the PSU screws and the ODD screws.

The manual is well written and has images along the way to help guide you through every step and the dismantling of this chassis to get all your goods into it. To be honest, the only reason I had during the whole process to reference this manual was to verify that I had all my goodies as I checked it against the list on page three.

The chassis design is just that easy to work with and figure out that you don’t really need the manual if you are an experienced builder, but it definitely will hold the hands of the inexperienced.

If you are using 3.5″ drives you simply bend this plastic frame around the drive until all of the pins align with the drive and then you just slide it back into the rack. For 2.5″ drives, you do have to remove a pin to allow the drive to sit correctly and then screw it in from the back.

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

Just like other HAF cases, the XM is built from steel and uses a combination of ABS plastic and mesh inserts to give this chassis its shape and style. Down the face there are large chunky plastic sides with both the 5.25″ bay and the two X-Dock bays having mesh covers. At the bottom there is a large mesh insert backed with a 200mm fan with a Cooler Master badge at the very bottom. The top of this chassis is also mostly plastic and stands a couple inches taller that the steel of the chassis.

Besides the front I/O with USB 3.0 and other connectivity and a storage tray just behind it, the back two thirds of the mesh covered top is removable for access to change the fan arrangement from the 200mm fan already installed here. Both sides of the chassis offer the bump-out that the HAF 922 had, just shaped slightly different and the left panel offers an area for fans and a large plastic handle to release this panel. The back of the chassis offers a 140 mm exhaust fan with an 8+1 expansion slot configuration and a bottom mounted PSU with a dust filter.

On the inside, at the front, there are racks for the three tool-free 5.25″ bays with the X-dock just below it. Moving down a bit more you find the HDD rack that can hold six 2.5″ drives or 3.5″ drives in the slide out trays. Also the top of this rack is removable to allow room for longer video cards inside this chassis. The motherboard tray inside of the chassis is laid out well offering plenty of wire management options; it can hold a 2.5″ drive behind the motherboard and is compatible with Micro-ATX, ATX and E-ATX boards. Another cool feature on the inside is that Cooler Master adds the PSU wire cover found in the HAF-X to keep it all very clean and professional looking when the build is completed.

As I said before, Cooler Master has always been very competitive with not only their designs, but most importantly, in pricing. As I looked for this chassis Google came up a bit lame with only one hit. So I dug a little deeper and specifically searched for this chassis at a few locations. I found all of them are selling the HAF XM for $129.99. Both Fry’s and Newegg are listing it for that currently, the only difference is whether you are paying tax for a local pickup or the shipping that differs between the two, with Fry’s having the slight edge in total pricing.

I realized a long time ago that to get an averagely equipped mid-tower it is going to cost you $99.99 and with the options incorporated into the HAF XM, it all comes down to looks with this chassis as I already know the price is spot on without even opening the box.

Conclusions

We have to admit that even before we removed the Cooler Master HAF XM from it’s box we were expecting a quality product with tons of features. We are pleased to report that we were not disappointed.

From the styling to the matte black finish on the heavy gage steel this product is crafted with quality. Each part fits in it’s place with precision. The seams are perfectly aligned and the panels and bezels are easy to remove and replace when users need to get under them. The cubby on top is a great place to drop cell phones, thumbscrews, or whatever.

The layout of the interior is well thought out, and gives ample room for any system components currently available. The placement of the extra 2.5 inch drive mount behind the M/B tray is a nice touch, though after looking at it we believe they could have put two in there with no problem. The 5.25 inch bay lock system is simple and easy to use. The sliding PSU wire cover keeps everything looking very clean. Wire management has been covered by the inclusion of more than enough access points and tie down spots, and Cooler Master supplies a generous amount of wire ties in the accessory box. The center fan mounts allow users to direct air from the front straight into the GPU’s, and the extra PCI slot beside the normal one’s is just a nice bonus feature.

There are enough places to mount fans or radiators to make most users happy, though some extreme cooling enthusiasts may not agree. The inclusion of dust filters on all intakes tells us that CoolerMaster pays attention and listens to its customer base. We are not to happy that removing the PSU filter requires removing the PSU first. We might have wanted a fan speed control, but the chassis fans are so quiet this case doesn’t need one.

There is placement for up to 9 disk drives, not counting optical, so storage options should never be a problem. With the inclusion of the X-Dock swap bays, the XM even provides easy disk management for those that need to swap out storage due to high file volume.

Finally our personal favorite feature, the Easy Access Latch Design, this makes getting the system open simple and quick while allowing the panel to be secure when closed. We found it to be a great feature while going in and out of the system to move wires and make adjustments. It will also make showing the system components off very easy. For those worried about security there is a lock loop built in.

CoolerMaster has been steadily building a reputation for excellence with the HAF series, We feel the HAF XM continues in this tradition.

Final Thoughts

To me Cooler Master took the finer points of what makes them such a success over the history of case designs that they have developed over the years and stuck in enough new «flavoring» to the exterior to make it a standalone contender.

The pricing for what is included with this chassis design is so right on the money, it’s going to be hard to pass this chassis up when making a selection of mid-tower — even some full-towers with the room the HAF XM offers. I like the PSU cover as it tidies things up inside so well. I also like the 8+1 configuration of the expansion slots, as it gives options for fan controllers or lighting controllers to those who plan to be filling those slots with up to three graphics cards. Since we are on the topic, the removable cage allowing for larger than eighteen inch video cards is just a bit insane for a mid-tower design, in a good way of course.

Even as it ships direct from the factory, the dual 200mm fans and the 140mm attached to the rear of the HAF XM are very efficient at not only keeping temperatures down, but even at full speed, noise levels are kept to a minimal hum. For those that want to pack as much as possible into this chassis, there are plenty of cooling options to keep you and you components content there as well. The removable top allowing for thicker radiators and room inside for the fans, the dual 120 or dual 140mm radiators should take care of most builds cooling needs. Even if you planned on having a triple stack of cards in here with the stock coolers, the left panel offers plenty of cooling options to be stuck to the door to force cool those cards.

It seems I am leaving so much out, but the build and assembly went so smooth there just isn’t anything bad I can really point out about this chassis. While keeping within the HAF pedigree in designs on the exterior, the HAF XM is the best HAF mid-tower I have seen and is only bested by the HAF-X in my opinion from this lineup.

Considering the cost of the HAF-X and its age, the HAF XM is going to be a hot seller at the $129.99, which I am seeing it listed at. The real question is do you have enough money in your wallet right now, because I know a lot of you are going to be building inside of the Cooler Master HAF XM.

  • два разъема USB 3.2 Gen1;
  • один разъем USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C;
  • один разъем 3.5 мм для гарнитуры;
  • кнопку Power с подсветкой;
Reset.

Testing & Methodology

Then we ran a torture test in Prime95 (In place large FFT’s, maximum heat, power consumption, some RAM tested) to load the CPU at 100% to heat up the CPU and get the MCP to warm up also.

After those got the system temps going, Furmark was used to overheat the GTX 480’s at an average load of 97-99%.Furmark settings (Post FX was disabled due to the exccesive heat generated when using it. GPU’s reached 107°C within minutes and were shutdown to avoid damage)

The CPU was overclocked to 2.51GHz, the two GTX 480’s at a core clock of 800, shaderclock of 1600, the GTX 560 at a core clock of 924, shaderclock of 1848. All GPUs overclocked using MSI afterburner, with fans on auto. CPU fan controlled by motherboard PWM circuit.  GTX 560 VRM temps have no sensor to report the info, it is therefore unavailable.

Packaging

Just as I would expect from Cooler Master packaging, they went with the black background to display the product over and the use of purple to accent the packaging is just what they do now. Along with the first look at the front of the chassis CM makes sure you know this is a mid-tower with a new door latch and offers 3-way SLI or CrossFireX support.

On this great expanse of black we get to see the HAF XM from the front, but also we get to see the left panel with the mesh and plastic handle for access. At the bottom there is a check box list for what is included inside the box as in model of chassis on PSU options.

The back of the box is where you can read up on all the features in finer detail. Along with the three images denoting the features there are multilingual descriptions of what is being pointed out here.

As with most boxes from CM we see, there has to be a full purple panel. Here they apply the specifications chart, the Cooler Master office information and the tiny writing that says this is a mid-tower case and for assistance and information you should go to www.coolermaster.com.

This chassis is pretty light for its size and the use of Styrofoam end caps were enough to safely deliver the HAF XM to me even with the abuse the box took. To keep scratches at bay the plastic liner is wrapped around the chassis prior to adding the caps.

A Closer Look at the CM HAF XM

The Cooler Master HAF XM that I received is the non windowed version. You won’t be able to see the inside because there’s no window from the side panel, but with the non windowed version you can add 1x 200mm fan or 2x 140mm / 120mm fans on the side panel.

Let’s talk about what’s in front of the HAF XM first. We have a large hexagon shape power button with Red LED. On the left is an On and Off switch for the 200mm fan, which by default is placed in front of the case. On the right is a reset button, and both buttons have LED indicators on top of them. There is also a space where you can place your smartphone, which is actually perfect for an iPhone 5.

There are 3x 5.25-inch drive bays and two X-Dock slots for hot swappable hard drives. But you can also convert these slots to become a regular HDD cage by just removing the PCB of the X Dock located inside the case.

Also in front of the case is the huge air inflow ventilation with a Cooler Master Logo on the middle. In front you can add 120mm fans, 140mm fans or even 200mm fan (default). The side panel features a latch so that you can easily remove the side panel without sliding it, and making it very accessible.

On top you can add 2x 200mm fans, or 2x 140mm fans or even 3x 120mm fans. You can also put either a 240mm radiator or 360mm radiator for water cooling. There are also holes on the upper back of the case for water cooling tubes. You can either install a 140mm exhaust fan (default) or a 120mm fan with a 120mm radiator for the exhaust.

Inside the Cooler Master HAF XM, there’s plenty of space for your components. It can support from ITX up to EATX motherboards. There are 6 drive cages for your hard drives, of which the upper portion of the HDD cage can be remove if you plan to install longer graphics card.

There are also holes for cable management and also a covering right next to the PSU to hide the cables. On the other side of the HAF XM, there is a hidden mounting slot for 1 SSD (Solid State Drive) just beneath the back CPU hole. Just take a look at the pictures above.

Cooler Master HAF XM Mid-Tower Chassis

The front of the HAF XM has block-like, chunky, plastic sides that flank the front I/O panel, the mesh covers for the ODD bays and X-Dock bays and the large intake area also covered with mesh.

The front I/O panel offers USB 2.0, a headphone and microphone 3.5mm jack and USB 3.0 connectivity on the right.

The sticker on the X-Dock bays reminds you to remove this pair of trays before trying to remove the front bezel. If you don’t, you will pull out the drive trays as the panel is pulled and if you have a disc in there, it could end badly.

The top of the chassis starts with a light switch, power and reset buttons with a storage bin right behind it. As for the two mesh areas at the back of the top…

… It is removable with the removal of a thumbscrew in the back. CM sends a 200mm fan in here from the factory, but they do spec this area to allow for a dual 140mm radiator as the largest you can run in this area with the provided mounting holes.

The left side has a large bump-out to allow room for both the fans that can optionally be installed here and not have them rubbing on the sides of you triple video card setups. There is also a handle that releases this panel, but you have to take out a pair of thumbscrews in the back first to make this handle useful.

At the very top you can see the screw that allows you to remove the top, just above the tubing and wiring pass-through holes. Below the 140mm fan is an 8+1 configuration of the slots to give you options along with multi card configurations.

The right side of the chassis has the same bump out, so that you can really stack up the wiring and the panel will just swallow up just about anything you can want to run behind the motherboard tray.

Interior & Installation

CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

Opening the case we find the accessory box secured inside (contents shown on previous page). We also see that this chassis shares some interior features with the HAF X, such as the sliding PSU cable cover. Also, the HDD cage is very much like many other CoolerMaster HAF chassis. While there are similarities, the rest of this interior is enough different to make this a whole new case. The tray opening allowing access to the CPU fan mount is huge, facilitating easy changes to cooling options. The optical drive locks are different, the placement of the wire management holes is different. Ok, let’s look at what it does have in here.

  CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

First we have the ODD locks for the 5.25 inch bays. These are a simple to use: flip the switch forward to unlock, slide in a device, then flip it to the back of the case to lock it. Next we have the HDD trays, on the left is the tray from the front X-Dock, on the right is the interior HDD cage tray. The following shot shows a 2.5 inch drive mounted to the X-Dock tray. This required removing one of the anti-vibration mounts used if mounting a 3.5 inch HDD. Next we see both a 2.5 and a 3.5 inch drive mounted in the HDD cage. The last image in this group shows one of two possible interior fan mounts, the other is directly under the one used here. This fan was mounted for demonstration purposes only and is not included during testing.

The rest of the installation was fairly typical and we encountered no difficulties.

CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

When the motherboard was installed it was installed Transformer3 CPU cooler and all. Sitting on the bench, begging to be used was was a CoolerMaster TPC 812 (review coming soon) sealed in the box. So of course we had to use it, just to see how difficult it would be to change out in the case.

CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

First step was the removal of the stock AMD retention collar and back plate, 4 screws out and done. then of course we cleaned the old TIM off the CPU.

CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

Our cooler installation was extremely easy. The details will be included in the cooler review (coming soon).

                    CLICK IMAGES FOR LARGER VIEW

One thing that has been a problem in the last 4 or five cases we’ve used was interference by a set of wires used to add rear ports where they crossed the bottom GPU. This wasn’t a design flaw in the wires, GPU or chassis, it was just a problematic hardware configuration. The wire would rub on the fans no matter how we installed them when using PCI slots above or below the ones the motherboard uses. This chassis provides one extra that is outside of the normal layout and perfect for our needs. It can be used for this, one of the fans that mounts in a PCI slot, an antenna mount, or anything that doesn’t require mounting directly into the motherboard. The CoolerMaster HAF XM is very easy case to build in. The only thing we regret in fact is that we didn’t notice that the center 5.25 cover was pushed in while we took these shots. It mounts securely, but we forgot to make sure it was secure.

Now we move on to testing this chassis for temperature control.

  • вместительный для габаритных комплектующих;
  • в комплекте четыре вентилятора;
  • есть места для установки 360-мм радиаторов СЖО;
  • отличная продуваемость внутреннего пространства;
  • низкие температуры комплектующих во время нагрузки;
  • удобные съемные антипылевые фильтры;

  • шумные 200-мм вентиляторы;
