Now the next question is, “How much better are these $700 headphones than my $70 headphones?” To test this, I tested my Audio Technica ATH-2 against the HE-500.

The ATH-2 cost me $20 a few months ago and rarely go over $70. In all fairness, after all the rather intense mods I did to them, they sound closer to something one would expect to cost $150, but these are the only commercial planars I have, so I have no other point of reference.

My other headphones are equally as rare, and comparing the HE-500 to a Portapro or K271, no matter how respectable the two more common headphones are, is rather absurd because of the completely different purposes of the two.

The HE-500s actually sound like a perfected ATH-2 in quite a few ways. The increases, however, aren’t as drastic as I’d hoped, but it’s an easily discernable difference indeed, coming from someone who doesn’t really moan about using 192kbps MP3 if I have to.

Percentages don’t do all too much, but the increase is about 30% all around with more realistic mids, bass weight, quality, and treble that isn’t as dismal as in the ATH-2.

Is the HE-500 “worth it” in every sense of the word? Well…no. That’s not the point though. While they’re not “worth it” in the strictest sense, to us OCD audio nerds, they can bring us to a new level of music appreciation.

Hifiman Edition X

Впрочем, летом любые накладные мониторы вызывают дискомфорт, так что проблема кроется лишь в особенностях эксплуатации полноразмерных наушников.

Внешним видом Иксы напоминают флагманские Hifiman HE-1000. Только легче на 100 г, меньше на 20% и дешевле на $1200.

Особенность планарных изодинамических наушников в тонкой плёночной мембране с нанесёнными на неё металлическими токопроводящими дорожками, заключённую в решётку из стержневых магнитов и колеблющуюся между ними. Рисунок магнитной системы и дорожек на диафграгме оптимизированы для линейного поршневого движения с минимальным искажением звука.

Никогда прежде я не слышал настолько детального воспроизведения музыки с айфона. Такое впечатление, что резко перешел с топлива АИ-76 на АИ-98.

Барабаны Ларса Ульриха из песни Metallica – Enter Sandman, которая считается эталоном хард-рока, заставили кровь течь быстрее. Comfort

Another aspect where the HiFiMAN HE-500 feels lacking is comfort.

Sure, the headphones come with two pairs of ear pads – leather and velour – but neither pair feels quite right. Part of this has to do with the weight of the headphones. The HE-500 weigh in at 500 grams (just over 1.1 lbs)! This super heavyweight design can work and it has worked in other headphones, but only when the overall construction is made to functionally support this weight. And this just isn’t the case with the HE-500.

The clamping force thankfully isn’t too strong, as the ear pads are mediocre enough already, but the pressure from all that weight has to go somewhere. In this case, that somewhere is at the top of the headband. Combine this with the fact that the headband also feels sorely lacking in the padding department and you’ve got yourself a recipe for discomfort.

If you can get an aftermarket pair of earpads and something to soften the headband, then the change in comfort is significant. This is worth doing and has been done by many people who sought to enjoy the excellent audio these headphones provide. Even then, the weight of the headphones won’t be kind to your neck, but you should be able to wear them for at least a couple of hours on end.

Источником этих масштабности и напора является мощный, грузный бас наушников. Его в звучании много, при этом он отлично проработан: быстр, собран, чёток. Правда, на пересыщенных низкими частотами композициях он может слегка «подгуживать». Если б не этот досадный недостаток, HiFiMAN HE-500 можно было бы считать обладателями лучшего по качеству баса в своей категории, а так — первое место «уходит» Alessandro Music Series Pro.

Зато HiFiMAN HE-500 буквально «уделывают всех» по качеству средних частот. В этом диапазоне они обладают ещё более высокой, чем HE-400, разрешающей способностью. И если HE-400 по разборчивости и обилию нюансов на «середине» могут тягаться с наушниками из категории HE-500, то сами HE-500 оставляют оппонентов далеко позади, и почти что догоняют однодрайверную «арматуру».

Настолько же детально проработанными тембрами вокала и большинства инструментов, столь же отчётливым воспроизведением основной массы ревербераций и затуханий, и, в конце концов, столь же убедительным ощущением реализма воспроизводимого музыкального действа, не могут похвастать ни одни другие полноразмерные наушники в нашем тесте. Что тут сказать — вот она, «топовая» изодинамика в действии!

Конечно, как это всегда бывает, в большой и сладкой бочке мёда, которой предстаёт звучание HiFiMAN HE-500, не обошлось без ложечки… некоего, не особо приятного на вкус вещества. Кроется она в области высоких частот.

В общем и целом, высокие частоты у HiFiMAN HE-500 несколько приглушены, при этом — подаются детально и достаточно естественно. Однако, где-то ближе к началу высокочастотной области, слышен «всплеск» АЧХ. Этот всплеск делает подачу высоких частот слегка огрублённой — особенно сильно это ощущается на записях, где количество высоких частот изначально завышено — на более «спокойных» фонограммах может и не ощущаться совсем. Вот она, та самая «ложечка». Кто-то из слушателей, вероятно, сможет «проглотить» её, и не заметить, но кого-то она постоянно будет мучить «горьким послевкусием».

Our Verdict

So in conclusion, what have we learned? Well, we’ve learned that Hifiman definitely knows how to make a good planar magnetic headphone.

We have also learned that Kyle wants one. And as I’ve stated, we’re talking about a top-tier headphone here. Anybody reading this knows that they’re great. When you’re paying over $500 for a headphone, by St. Loy they must be great! No, the question here is, “Will these ever make me cry?” And that, my friends, is what the HE-500 does best.

They’re not the last word in terms of bass, or treble, but the (low to upper mid) mids, gosh, the mids are what draw you in and keep you in a trance that you will downright refuse to escape from.

And that, my friends, is easily worth the $700 price of entry. (Yes, $700, not $900. Dr. Fang reduced the price of the HE-500 by $200 and added leather pads and a silver cable as of November 10, 2011.)

Sure, they aren’t worth $500 more than most $200 headphones, but it is with great sorrow that I must now send them off to the next person in line to experience the HE-500. I shall truly miss it unless I buy one for myself, which may be inevitable.

Sound

The reason the HiFiMAN HE-500 is so heavy boils down to one reason – it uses planar-magnetic drivers. You can read all about how planar-magnetic drivers work and how they compare to other headphone drivers in this article. We highly recommend you do so if you are unfamiliar with this term, as it’s not something we can just abridge to one or two sentences.

Planar-magnetic headphones lend themselves to an open-back design, which is why the HE-500 is an open-back pair of headphones. In fact, it is one of the most opened headphones on the market – you can still hear everything that’s going on around you while wearing the HE-500 as if the device wasn’t even there. This also means you can throw sound isolation out of the equation entirely.

So, needless to say, the HE-500 has a superbly wide soundstage. It’s also got amazing imaging and great instrument separation to go with it. This all combines to give the HE-500 a sound that is best described as exciting – the music is there, in your room, all around you.

Typically, an exciting pair of headphones feature a V-shaped frequency range or boosted lows, but not the HE-500. These headphones have a balanced sound that is still somehow warm, fast and exciting.

The bass is very detailed yet still strong and punchy. It doesn’t shine as well in genres like rap or electronic music, but for everything else where you want to feel the smooth and creamy texture of the bass, the HE-500 is a treat for the ears.

What’s most impressive about it is how responsive it is, although this goes for the entire frequency range – the HE-500 will bring out details in music that you never knew were there. The mids are also spectacular, especially the vocals. Yet the thing that stands out the most about the crystal clear highs is how non-sibilant they are.

So overall, the HE-500 is outstanding with regards to audio quality. It performs flawlessly across the entire frequency range and delivers a warm yet balanced sound that is hard to find anywhere else. It is harder to drive so you will need an amplifier to get the most out of it.

Sound Impressions

The HE-500 was initially called the HE6p to say that these are meant to be a more sensitive version of the HE6, which was known to be silly power hungry—almost to the needs of the fabled AKG K1000.

The result is a headphone that a regular MP3 player can actually begin to drive. Granted, they don’t sound their best from a simple DAP, but nobody buys a $700 planar headphone for that use, right?

Summary

Enough about the unimportant stuff though. How do they sound? Well, put simply, they sound fantastic. I could easily leave it at that and just tell everyone to buy them, but that’s just no fun.

The setups used are the Burson HA160D to my computer or a Bang and Olufsen 2402 turntable with some cheap preamp and the HA160D as the amp.

Bass

Let’s start from the ground up. The lowest of the lows is surprisingly present and face-shakey. Listening to Echospace’s Liumin was simply a treat with the HE-500, something I certainly didn’t think I would say.

They went down to 20hz with great ease—who said open headphones can’t do bass? Going a bit up the frequency range, mid-bass was punchy, but to call it overbearing would be insane.

While they certainly know how to put out some bass, it could never be called the focus of the HE-500’s sound. The bass was mesmerizingly quick and detailed, tympanis were cavernous, synth bass was, well, infectiously conveyed in a way that makes them recommendable for electronic.

Mids

The midrange is the hallmark of most planars and the HE-500 certainly does not disappoint. I used to say that my Beyerdynamic DT48 has the best midrange I’d ever heard.

Well the HE-500 absolutely crushes it in terms of presentation. As much as I love the DT48, it’s just the slightest bit too colored to be the absolute reference for anybody. It’s tilted slightly too high for most instruments, but no slouch regardless.

However, the HE-500 sounds simply captivating. These should be the benchmark every headphone manufacturer making a product under $500 should live up to. Vocals are tear-jerking, guitars are frighteningly realistic, brass is mostly spot-on.

I say mostly because as with every other planar headphone I’ve heard, the upper midrange has a bit of an unnatural tinge to it, making upper brass and sopranos sound nasaly, but not obviously so.

Treble

Treble is forward, but not piercing. The forward treble seems to be the complaint of most, but it’s easily fixable with a soft amp, like the Burson HA160, or decreasing the treble by either software or mechanical-placing some craft felt in front of the driver lowers treble, but kills some of the midrange magic-means.

Treble has always been hard to gauge for me because there aren’t very many instruments I can test for treble other than the highest pipe organ notes and cymbals; the rest only get so high with harmonics.

Regardless, the HE-500’s treble can’t really be described as “smooth,” yet it’s never piercing. To my ears, it’s probably the ideal amount of treble. Now for the stuff within the high frequencies, detail is astounding. Microdetails I never heard before now became plainly obvious. In a song in A Fine Frenzy’s One Cell in the Sea, I can almost plainly hear something fall from a piano.

Soundstage, while not massive, is still of respectable size. Classical won’t be the most spacious thing in the world with the HE-500, but this is an inherent problem with these planars, sadly. Timbre is impressive, but not perfect.

To be overly anal, they made a Selmer Super Balance Action alto sax sound ever so slightly flat, which could be a problem from everything else, but I don’t want anybody expecting perfect timbre from this humble headphone.

Comfort

The one thing that most are probably wondering about is their heft. Well, these are easily the biggest headphones I have here, but surprisingly, they don’t feel like the heaviest.

No, that honor belongs to the Beyerdynamic DT48 with their completely aluminum build weighing in at 400g and actually starting to hurt my neck after an hour due to their weird weight distribution.

In contrast, the HE-500 are so freakin big that the weight doesn’t seem so significant. Sure, it’s heavy, but not painfully so. The clamp is something fierce, but the big fluffy velour pads make the clamp easily bearable.

I managed to wear the HE-500 for six hours straight for a few sessions. Sound leakage is another obvious issue. They leak pretty badly, but not as much as something like a Grado.

The HE-500s are somewhat bigger than the already large AKG K271

Planar magnetic drivers are my favorite type of headphone tech, mostly because they tend to have better treble than typical dynamic drivers, do not need a special amp unlike electrostats, and before Hifiman and Audez’e started making headphones, are wonderfully cheap, averaging under $100 for a capable planar.

I could explain how the drivers work, but Tyll Hertsens, one of the people who sparked the “headphone era” explains it better in his own article.

This technology was pretty big in the ’70s-’80s with companies such as Yamaha, Fostex, Audio Technica, Aiwa, Akai, and some other companies that you didn’t know made headphones, but eventually, production of these was halted in all except Fostex’s product lines. Fostex still makes planars—the T20RP, T40RP, and T50RP and are the basis of some awesome mods.

Synergy

Electronica

For electronic music, I used Echospace’s Liumin, as stated above. This is a…frankly, I don’t even know. DeepChord (from which Echospace is derived) has been called dub techno, whatever that means.

But what I do know is that the HE-500 takes the bass this song has by the reins and commands it with a certain proficiency that made me smile throughout the entire album. It never loses control and is just roughly an hour of fun.

Vocals

Female Vocals were judged with Hayley Westenra’s Treasure. I just love her delicate, yet powerful voice. The HE-500 was made for her—she felt like she was right in front of me, singing Shenandoah, but sadly, she wasn’t. Probably a good thing though, because she probably wouldn’t find my fluffy pajama pants particularly sexy…

Instruments

I used a remastered Mahler LP I have for classical. The presentation was spot on, violins had a very lush, pleasing character, violas, well, were somehow respectable—just kidding, the violas were great, but nobody actually likes the violas, so they’re not important.

Flutes were light and airy. Brass was on the bright side but still retained good character. I apologize for the lack of real input here, but I’m too busy replaying the album!

Jazz

Jazz was represented by Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. Miles’ trumpet was mesmerizing. I don’t know of any other headphones I’d ever be able to afford that could playback this album much better than what the HE-500 did.

Again, I apologize for the lack of input, but I can’t seem to focus on what I’m typing up, and if I type after I listen to the album, I lose the magic that I’ve heard.

Acoustics

I used John Butler Trio’s Live at St. Gallen album for judging acoustic performance. I had to listen to it a second time around to even pay attention to what was going on. The emotion conveyed was just so incredible that it’s hard to listen to any of the songs analytically.

At this level, it’s not really a matter of if something sounds good or not—it always will sound good—it’s a matter of how much a song can move you and strike you at your core, and the HE-500 can do that without batting an eye, and more.

It’s more or less pointless to talk about how the HE-500 sounds with certain genres. It’s something you must experience for yourself to really “get it.” Words are too vague to describe what the HE-500 does to you.

Build

Visually, the HE-500 look very simple – they’ve got two large cans and a headband. The logo with the model name is about the only decoration these mono-colored headphones have. And this no-nonsense design philosophy feels adequate for these headphones. They are here to do one thing and one thing only: deliver phenomenal sound.

And deliver phenomenal sound they do (more on that later), but unfortunately, this means that other aspects of the headphone feel lacking in places. For example, the HE-500 comes in a sturdy and premium-feeling box. Inside the box, you get the headphones, two pairs of earpads, a pouch, a ¼ inch braided silver screw-on cable, and extra screw-on connectors if you would like to use a different cable.

You should use a different cable.

Even assuming a price of $400 or $500 (which is what the HE-500 can typically be found for nowadays, although the refurbished models on the HiFiMAN store go for $600), the cable just feels poorly made and not up to snuff with the sound quality.

The screw-on design is something we’re glad to see hasn’t caught on. It’s not that it doesn’t work – it works fine – but it can be too stable for its own good. If a normal detachable cable catches on something, it will most likely just get yanked out of the earcup, but not this cable. Eventually, this will either destroy the cable or the headphones if you’re not careful.

Thankfully, the headphones are rather sturdy. The materials used for the HE-500 are a combination of plastic, metal and leather, so the device feels durable enough that it can take its fair bit of punishment.

Build Quality & Comfort

The headphones themselves feel not that bad. Sure, I’ve heard a lot about the old HiFiMAN’s quality control problems, but for the moment I don’t have an issue with them. There are plenty of complaints about the SMC connectors that can be sometimes loose. However, I’ve never had have this issue with my unit. I can use them for days without having the slightest sign of detachment.

The metal articulations look more durable than the ones on the HE-400i. Although the stock pads don’t look that great, the Focus-A pads are soft and comfortable. They are angled and my ears don’t touch the inside where the orthodynamic drivers are clearly visible. The headband padding is very nice and thick but could have been better designed. The weighing scale gave me a solid 540g (without cables), even more than the 502g stated by HiFiMAN.

That simple headband doesn’t really support the weight of the headphones on and around the head well. The clamping force is not hard on my ears so all the weight pressure is located at the top of the headband.

Although I don’t feel any hotspot on top of my head, I can be neck tired after 3 – 4 hours of listening to them, just because of the imperfect weight distribution.

This is the only issue with the comfort that I had. Overall, they are a reasonably comfortable pair of headphone. The HE-400i has a better headband and weighs 165g less, the HD600 has thicker headband padding and weighs exactly HALF the HE500’s weight. Both are more comfortable than the HE-500 and among the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever used.

Design

In the pictures, the HE-500 looks unassuming. Everyone knows that it’s made of plastic, an instant negative point in the eyes of those that say metal is the material for the extravagant, which this headphone truly is.

However, what pictures don’t show is that the plastic the HE-500 is made from really isn’t the type that should be scoffed at; it seems sturdy, it’s painted beautifully, and I really wouldn’t give a car about what the cups are made of if I was the reader.

The headband is padded with memory foam and lusciously supple leather. The connectors are a twist-to-lock affair, which is a system that’s not the easiest to secure. The pads that came with these are the old velour pads with the breakable tabs.

They’re pretty average pads actually. They actually don’t feel as nice as my AKG velours. I was going to talk about the thick Canare cable, but it seems that as of yesterday, the HE-500 now comes with a silver cable, not this cable.

Hifiman Edition S

На презентации Фэн Бен сказал, что Hifiman на протяжении лет получала запросы выпустить закрытую модель on-ear. С появлением Edition S волки (аудиофилы) остались сытыми, а овцы (обычный пользователь) целыми. Двойная конструкция наушников делает их универсальными для дома и поездок. Они складываются, как полагается всем портативным наушникам, а в комплекте имеется чехол для перевозки.

Открытая конфигурация шире передает звуковую сцену, потому что отсутствуют отражающие волны, которые меняют звучание не в лучшую сторону.

С другой стороны, наушники открытого типа не годятся для транспорта и людных мест, так как окружающие будут слышать ваши треки, как если бы на голове у вас была портативная bluetooth-колонка. Хотите целым и невредимым доехать домой, не слушайте через «открытые» наушники музыку в метро. Народ вас не поймет, а некоторые пассажиры могут пойти на конфликт.

Hifiman отказалась от проприетарных байонетов и снабдила наушники универсальным из бескислородной меди кабелем 2.5-3.5 мм с пультом управления музыкой на смартфоне. Если родной кабель чем-то не устраивает, вставляем свой любимый.

50-мм драйверы имеют низкое сопротивление 18 Ом и чувствительность 113 дБ. Любой смартфон их раскачает.

Наушники весят немного – 248 г. Монолитное оголовье и удобная конструкция шарниров чашек дарят комфорт при долгом прослушивании музыки.

Наушники хорошо передают низкие частоты, однако с фрагментами глубокого баса трека James Blake – Limit to Your Love не справились. Ожидаемый результат, тут нужны полноразмерные мониторы (читай ниже про такие).

Тест на средние частоты принимала индастриал-команда KMFDM с ураганной композицией Son of a Gun. Большинство наушников на этой песне пасуют, а результат микса басов и средних превращается в винегрет. Однако стоило снять с чаш Edition S закрывающие панели, как конфигурация стала открытой: понизилось влияние басов, звук стал четче, средние частоты получили второй шанс.

Вокал тестировала Анна Герман с оркестровой обработкой «Эха любви» (без Льва Лещенко). Чистый голос и детальное звучания инструментов получили одобрение экзаменатора в открытой конфигурации.

Итог: наушники-трансформер Hifiman Edition S за счет снятия пластин чашек превращаются из закрытых в открытые. Таким образом можно влиять на звучание и наслаждаться музыкой в зависимости от внешний условий: дома – открытый тип, в людных местах – закрытый.

Normally in these types of product reviews, we have at least four categories by which the product is scored and evaluated – build/design, comfort, features, and sound. The features portion is missing here because there’s just nothing to talk about.

So to sum it up, the HiFiMAN HE-500 is a planar magnetic set of headphones that’s plain-looking, heavy, fairly uncomfortable, and that also requires additional investments to get the most out of (earpads, something to pad the headband, better cable). It requires an amplifier to use properly, so using it in outdoor situations also isn’t likely unless you also get an external amplifier/DAC like the Chord Mojo.

Yet even with all of these downsides, the HiFiMAN HE-500 is still worth buying just for the sound quality alone.

These are not headphones that we would recommend to most people. You have to value sound quality to the exclusion of everything else and be willing to jump through many hoops to even get your hands on one of these headphones, but those who deem this level of effort reasonable in their pursuit of high-quality audio will not find the HE-500 lacking.

Излучатели в HiFiMAN HE-500 применяются более крупные, чем в HE-400. А большие изодинамические излучатели всегда весят много — значительно больше, чем обычные «динамики». Поэтому и сами HE-500 получились довольно тяжёлыми — их масса «переваливает» за полкило! На контрасте с динамическими оппонентами, столь исполинский вес ощущается очень остро. Однако, буквально после пары-тройки минут использования HiFiMAN HE-500, к нему привыкаешь — и дискомфорта не чувствуешь.

Сила прижима чашек у HiFiMAN HE-500 не очень велика, лучше не совершать в этих наушниках резких движений головой — могут слететь. Амбушюры сделаны из приятной тактильно ткани. По глубине они — средние, такой свободы, как при использовании Sennheiser HD800 и Beyerdynamic T1, ушные раковины в них ощущать не будут, но всё равно, им будет комфортно.

Основные характеристики мониторных наушников

Чувствительность. Чувствительность является пропорцией между громкостью воспроизводимого звука и силой входного сигнала, выраженной мощностью и напряжением (рекомендуется от 90 дБ и выше).
Частотный диапазон = качество звучания. Его средний параметр – это полоса воспроизводимых частот 20-20000 Гц. Причём чем шире этот параметр, тем лучше.
Импеданс. Характеристика, определяющая электрическое сопротивление устройств (рекомендуется чем больше, тем лучше).
АЧХ. Та самая амплитудно-частотная характеристика, которая, как уже говорилось, должна быть абсолютно линейной.
Диаметр мембраны. Правило выбора простое – чем больше диаметр, тем четче звук.
Мощность. Вообще современные системы имеют мощность, которая варьируется от 1 мВт до 5 тыс. мВт. Обычно «студийники» обладают мощностью в несколько сот милливатт.
Коэффициент гармонических искажений. Характеристика, которая говорит о чистоте и четкости звучания устройств. В профессиональных системах этот параметр не превышает 0.5%.
