Configurations of Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551
Asus will sell the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 in three configurations. Starting at the top is the $3,699 GX551QS-XS99 we tested, sporting a 120 Hz 4K main display, AMD’s top-end Ryzen R9-5900HX CPU and Nvidia’s RTX 3080 graphics, paired with two 1TB SSDs and 32GB of RAM. Stepping down to the $2,899 GX551QR-XS98 model keeps the CPU and RAM the same, but drops down to RTX 3070 graphics, nixes one of the SSDs (giving you a single 1TB drive), and swaps the 4K display for a 1080p, 300 Hz speedster. For esports enthusiasts, this is a good pick, as the 3070 should still be plenty powerful enough to run those kinds of games at triple-digit frame rates.
The $2,199 entry-level model (GX551QM-ES76) also includes the 1080p 300Hz screen and 1TB SSD, but drops the RAM down to 16GB and opts for an RTX 3060 — still plenty for 1080p gaming, just not always at extremely high frame rates.
Keyboard and Touchpad on Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551

As is the norm with dual-screen laptops in recent years, the addition of the second display above the screen means the touchpad gets shoved to the side of the keyboard and the keys get moved down so that there’s no area below them to rest your wrists.
Asus attempts to lessen this pain point by including a solid rubber wrist rest in the box. That’s better than nothing, but given its fairly substantial heft (and the fact that its rough rubber surface attracts dirt and dust like magic), you’re probably not going to take it with you on the go.
And while the keys look good with their RGB backlighting that flashes red when the system boots up, they don’t feel great. The 1.4mm of travel is about what I’d expect in a gaming laptop this thin, but strokes feel more rubbery than I’d like at this price, and the arrow and function keys are tiny.
Directly to the right of those arrow keys sits the 2.3 x 2.9-inch touchpad. Just like with the previous Duo laptops, it’s accurate and gets the job done, but it’s narrow and not where it belongs. That said, given this is a gaming laptop, you’re almost certainly going to be using a dedicated mouse most of the time anyway, so I found the touchpad here a bit less awkward than on some other dual-screen portables. And at least long-pressing on an icon in the upper-left corner lets you turn the touchpad into a number pad for faster data input.
In short, as with all other dual-screen laptops we’ve tested, you trade anything approaching ‘good’ peripherals for the sake of the second screen here. On most other gaming laptops in this price range (or even significantly less) you could get mechanical switches and a roomier touchpad that sits below the keys where it belongs. If good, comfortable peripherals are important to you, you should weigh that against how handy you think a second screen will be.

While the SE version of the Duo doesn’t go overboard with new features, Asus has complimented the pair of speakers in the original with a couple “Smart Amp woofers” that Asus says allows for immersive Dolby Atmos surround sound.
Now, any claim of true surround sound coming from four speakers in a laptop is dubious at best. But I can say that there’s some noticeable low-end thump here. When listening to the opener, “Purge,” from Frontline Assembly’s latest album Mechanical Soul, there was a visceral weight to the opening bassline with the laptop at max volume, even before the beat kicked in. And Bill Leeb’s distorted, pitch-shifted vocals sounded as menacing as ever.
That said, while there wasn’t any distortion with the volume all the way up, I often found myself wishing for more volume. What’s here is fine for gaming and video at moderate volumes, but if you really want powerful sound you’ll have to plug in headphones or pair a good Bluetooth speaker.

Primary Display on Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551

The 4K, 120 Hz primary display option on our review configuration of the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 is quite impressive. Aside from being fast for esports and pixel-dense for AAA titles and media playback, it’s also bright and colorful. The panel covers 91.2% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is at least 12% better than its competitors here. And with a 349-nit tested brightness, it also shines brighter than the competition, beating the Aorus 17G by 49 nits.
And while it’s not quite as colorful or bright, the secondary ScreenPad Plus is also very good, delivering color and brightness that’s just a bit behind the primary display.

The 3840 x 1100-resolution ScreenPad Plus display sits below the primary 3840×2160 display and effectively gives you enough extra screen real estate to place two 7.75-inch, 1920x 1100 windows above the keyboard, one on each side. My primary use case while gaming for this would be to have a music program (or BandCamp) open on one side, and either a chat app or game walkthrough on the other.
In productivity situations, there are basically endless possibilities. But Asus also has options in its ScreenXpert software for overlaying a control panel across the full width of the screen, adding dedicated dials, knobs and sliders for tasks in various Adobe applications. For those who spend hours a day (when not gaming, of course) in AfterEffects, Photoshop, Lightroom or Premiere Pro.
You can also now mirror your phone screen and even make calls when your phone is paired with the MyAsus app. Other options include the ability to turn the entire ScreenPad into a touchpad, which can be handy for signatures or some light drawing. You can set any app to launch directly to the ScreenPad Plus when launched via the ScreenXpert dock — handy for music or chat apps that don’t need lots of screen real estate.
The best features of the previous version of the software also carry over, like the ability to swap apps between screens with the tap of a button or a drop onto a small floating dock, and save program layouts into groups so you can launch them and get your workspace back the way you like it with a couple of taps after rebooting.
It’s clear that Asus has put some serious effort into ScreenXpert, and it continues to improve every time I see it. And this time around, I didn’t experience a single crash while using it. While it’s not always instantly intuitive, those who like the idea of a dual-screen laptop enough to buy the ZenBook UX482 shouldn’t have a hard time getting used to it. If you make ample use of it, ScreenXpert and the ScreenPad Plus can deliver an experience that’s different and in some ways better than traditional single-screen laptops. And that’s a good thing, since there are serious sacrifices to the keyboard and touchpad to make room for this laptop’s primary differentiating feature — its second sceeen.

Hardware and performance
I mentioned already we can’t talk performance or benchmarks at this point, based on this early sample.
I can tell you that for now, the 2021 Zephyrus Duo is built on AMD processors and Nvidia RTX 3000 graphics, with a Rzyen 9 5900H 8C/16T processor and a RTX 3080 GPU with 16 GB of video RAM at the highest tier. These are paired with up to 48 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz memory (16 GB on-board + 1 DIMM) and dual m.2 SSD storage.
Of course, Asus will offer the multitude of Power profiles and customization options we’ve been used with in the Armoury Crate control software, boosting both the CPU and the GPU at the highest-end. The official literature also mentions a couple of interesting aspects, such as the fact that liquid-metal is applied on the AMD processor with this generation, which was not an easy task given AMD’s more complex die design with extra SMB capacitors, or the fact that Asus worked on improving the CPU/GPU VRMs quality and number in order to consistently supply the components with the right amount of power in sustained loads.
As far as performance goes, Asus mentions that:
- the CPU can Boost at up to 90W on its own and run at up to 50W of sustained power when the dGPU is also active;
- the GPU runs at 1645 MHz and 115W on the Turbo profiles with ROG Boost enabled, and can jump up to 130 W of power from Dynamic Boost in certain games and loads, which shifts up to 15W of power from the CPU to the GPU.
As a side note, the MUX switch that used to allow for Optimus/GSyncs modes on the 2020 model has been replaced with the Active Sync technology now. In theory, that offers the best of both worlds and allows the system to seamlessly commute between the iGPU and dGPU, with an impact on battery life with daily use and while still hooking the screen directly into the dGPU with games, reducing lag and tearing.
The thermal design is going to play a significant role in this sort of high-power compact notebook as well. Previously, the Duo had to cope with the power-hungry i9-10980HK processor and struggled with in some cases, and I’d expect that to improve with the more efficient Ryzen 5000 platform. I’d also expect a noticeable gain in both single and multi-core performance.
Furthermore, Asus’s marketing materials mention reduced fan-noise for the 2021 ROG models, with a slight fan redesign (arc flow fans) meant to boost airflow while reducing turbulence and resonance/noise. Furthermore, 0db Technology is also a novelty for this year, allowing to completely switch both fans with light loads in the Silent mode, as long as the CPU/GPU stay below certain temperatures (to be clarified).

The battery is still 90W and hasn’t changed from the previous generation. However, the 2021 Duo comes with a slightly larger and higher capacity 280 W power-brick now. It also supports USB-C charging at up to 100W, an option to consider for daily-work if you’d rather leave the main charger at home.

It would be cheesy and cliched to suggest you look at the spec list and imagine how this might perform, but we’re not afraid of a journalistic shortcut or two. This is as monstrous as its components suggest, and it performs like an absolute star.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 isn’t some static feature-creep sequel. It sees Asus abandoning Intel to take advantage of AMD’s latest Ryzen 5000-series mobile processor — in this case the octa-core Ryzen 9 5900HX, which can boost its 16 threads up to 4.6 GHz.
The GPU boosts from the top end of Nvidia’s 20-series in the previous model to (predictably) the top end of the company’s 30-series mobile cards, itself tweaked and tuned by Asus’ custom overclocks. There’s a massive amount of solid-state storage, and a full 32GB RAM on board. It’s packed to the gills.

The 4K screen gets a boost from the previous generation’s 60Hz to 120Hz, and looks magnificent with it; that second display is a chopped-and-sliced 4K, and it’s cool, though getting the best viewing angle on it does depend on being up close and personal with the laptop. Given the awkward position of the keyboard this means typing like a T-Rex.
And so to the numbers. They’re huge. A quantum leap ahead of the last generation, in a machine which proves itself to be a 4K gaming powerhouse and one with 1080p muscle for days. The GX551 trounces its competition in just about every aspect — the CPU scores in Cinebench are outstanding, the 3DMark and PCMark scores far beyond what we were expecting, and the actual gaming benchmarks a real achievement. Outside of the slightly clinical world of benchmarks, playing games on the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551 feels great, smooth, slick, magnificent — but moving the laptop after a solid session proves that even with its large air intakes this is a machine that gets very hot.
We should point out, also, that the scores listed were taken in the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE GX551’s Turbo mode, which overclocks both the processor and GPU. That’s not cheating — it’s what this machine is capable of, which is the point in benchmarks — but to be fair we also ran the benchmarks in Performance mode, the mode you’ll run more often given that Turbo mode does allow the components to get slightly hotter (and the fans slightly louder) than we’d be comfortable with running on a regular basis. The results were reassuring: every single benchmark handily beat those of last year’s G550 by some margin.
In ‘Performance’ mode Cinebench R20 topped out at a respectable 4114, 3DMark’s Time Spy managed a very good 8071. PCMark dropped only slightly from its Turbo-addled score, scoring 6017, and each of the Red Dead Redemption 2 benchmarks dipped by around 5FPS — not something that was noticeable to our eyes.

Зато не обошлось и без нескольких опций «внутренностей» ROG Zephyrus Duo. Из процессоров есть варианты Intel Core i7-10875H и i9-10980HK, где с первой опцией можно выбрать видеокарту NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, а со старшей есть только комплектации с RTX 2080 SUPER (обе видеокарты с приставкой Max-Q Design и у обеих по 8 ГБ GDDR6). Оперативной памяти можно укомплектовать до 48 Гб DDR4 3200 МГц, а также есть два слота для NVMe-накопителей, куда производитель может установить от 512 ГБ до двух тебарайтных «планок» в режиме RAID 0. Связь с «внешним миром» можно поддерживать как по проводу, так и с помощью Wi-Fi 6, а для беспроводных устройств есть Bluetooth 5.0.
Результаты тестов ROG Zephyrus Duo порадовали. У нашей модели комплектация с Intel Core i7-10875H и NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, что в комбинации с Full HD-дисплеем теоретически должно устраивать геймеров. Согласно цифрам, тут производительности явно должно хватать не только на игры, но и на серьезные задачи обработки графики, видео и прочего. Собственно, для подобных случаев и предусматривается вариант с 4K-матрицей.
Хотя с играми получилась не такая однозначная история. Несмотря на то, что показатели FPS довольно неплохие как для портативного компьютера, на менее мощных видеокартах бывали цифры побольше. Нет, на игровом процессе это не сильно сказывается, но даже в Counter Strike: Global Offensive число кадров в ROG Zephyrus Duo могло падать ниже 80, что для такой комплектации явно маловато.

При этом греется корпус довольно ощутимо. При обычных «офисных» задачах и в режиме Silent (при котором охлаждение вовсе может отключаться), топкейс остается преимущественно прохладным, а температура процессора колеблется в пределах 45-55°С. Но стоит запустить игру и режим Turbo, как и вентиляторы начинают шуметь, и температура заметно увеличиваться. Несмотря на довольно много места для забора и отвода воздуха, тепло ощущается везде.
При температуре процессора более 80°С топкейс вокруг клавиатуры не обжигает, но трогать поверхность в районе охлаждения все же не стоит, там действительно горячо. При этом в ROG Zephyrus Duo используют термоинтерфейсы с применением жидкого металла и отдельно отмечают крупные воздухозаборники под вторым дисплеем. Как показала практика, пока этого не совсем хватает, чтобы держать довольно тонкий корпус хорошо охлажденным. Вероятно, где-то в этом и есть проблема «пары» недостающих кадров в играх, но не исключено, что это временные неудобства и в будущих программных обновлениях (а они довольно часто появляются) эти моменты «подрихтуют».
С ОС Windows тут есть все дополнения, которые делает ASUS для своих компьютеров. Для диагностики и обновлений ПО — это MyASUS, для работы со вторым дисплеем есть Screen Expert (с легкой визуальной разницей под стилистику игровой линейки), ну и как у любого Zephyrus, тут есть ARMORY CRATE для управления профилями производительности, подсветкой и прочими настройками.
